Roti Jala |
Just want to share another simple recipe from Malaysia. The recipe is called Roti Jala. The name is derived from the Malay word roti ("bread") and jala ("net"). A special mold with five-holes used to make the bread looks like a fish net. It is usually eaten as an accompaniment to a curried dish, or served as a sweet with serawa(will try to produce this in future post). Some people like to it Roti Jala with sambal.

Actually, the recipe is similar to western pancake recipe. The only differences are we use turmeric (for colouring) and a special mold to make the netty effects. The dish is very light and suitable to be served at any time and occasion. Not to worry if you could not find the mold from any store at your place because I would suggest you to DIY by making a few small holes under milk or coconut can.

Ingredients:
1/2lb plain flour
1 1/2 cup fresh milk
1/2 cup water
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
Method:
Add flour, turmeric powder and salt into a mixing bowl. Break eggs and whisk. Gradually add small quantities of milk and water mixture, still whisking. Whisk until the batter is smooth and thin. Heat a pan with some butter, ghee or cooking oil. Pour the mixture into a mold and immediately transfer onto the pan. The mixture will quickly flows through the mold and what you need to do is to make circular rounds around the pan to produce a netty effect. Once turn light brown (on both sides) transfer the Roti Jala onto a plate and fold to triangle or roll them up. Click this video for your easy reference.
